The Clothes Horse

The Clothes Horse is an on-campus ministry that provides clothes, toys, food, and small household items free of charge to all graduate students and their families. Faculty wives began this ministry over 45 years ago and the ministry of the Clothes Horse is made possible today by the work of many people.

The Clothes Horse accepts clothes of all sizes, as well as toys and small household items in good condition. There is very little space in the store so all items must be small enough to hang on a rack or sit on a shelf. Additionally, a food shelf is maintained in the store for non-perishable items. Popular foods include peanut butter, cereal, rice, tuna, pasta, and canned fruit. Please do not bring expired goods.

If you would like to make a donation of  food or clothing, please visit us during the following open hours:

April & May 2019 hours:

  • Tuesdays: 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. (Open from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. on these select Tuesday 4/16; 4/30; 5/14; & 5/28)
  • Thursdays: 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

CLOSED Easter Break (Apr 18-23)
(Please do not bring donations during Easter Break.)

We ask that items are not left in the hallway outside the store since it is located in a high traffic part of a classroom building. There is a Salvation Army bin outside the north entrance of the building where donations may be placed after hours. Donors may contact the store in advance to schedule an after-hours donation at (847) 317-8182.

Cash donations may be made through the Office of Institutional Advancement, and gifts should be designated for “The Clothes Horse”. Monetary gifts go directly to purchasing food items.

Checks can also be made, payable to TIU, memo line: “The Clothes Horse” and mailed to

Volunteers are always needed to help sort donations and assist customers. Qualifying students may earn Field Education or Service Learning credit.
