Dr. Laurie Matthias spent 23 years teaching middle and high school English. Her dissertation at Regent University, where she earned her doctorate in higher education with an emphasis in teaching, focused on the integration of faith and learning among exemplar professors at Wheaton College. She became a faculty member at Trinity International University in 2007 where she now serves as Associate Professor of Education and Director of the Education Programs at Trinity Graduate School. She has been married to Larry Matthias for 32 years, and they have three adult children and are eagerly anticipating the birth of their first grandchild this summer.
Dr. Matthias’s book, The Cry of the Teacher’s Soul, brings together her experience as a teacher and as an education professor, her interest in integrating the Christian faith into the vocation of teaching, and her passion for the personal flourishing of teachers. The book addresses the serious problem of teacher attrition by encouraging teachers to embrace the paradoxes of their faith and their teaching experiences. It focuses on the teacher’s inner life, both the mind and the heart, in order to build a solid framework in which teachers can navigate the challenges that face them.
Dr. Matthias takes seriously the mission of Trinity’s Division of Education: “Teaching as a Mission: Touching Lives, One Student at a Time.” In her role as director of the graduate education programs, she values the life experience that adults bring to their preparation for the teaching vocation, viewing them holistically and training them to see their own students in the same way. In her view, state standards for teachers and personal flourishing are not contradictory, nor are theory and practice. Therefore, she ensures that every student in the Master of Arts in Teaching and the Master of Education in Diverse Learning is equipped with professional expertise as well as a deep confidence in their vocation.
